The first stamps for use in overseas Italian Post Offices used modified Italian stamps overprinted ESTERO. The modification consisted of blanking out parts of the design in the corners, and rare varieties do occur where this was either not done on any corner, or not done on one or two corners. In some cases the modification was incomplete, as in the example below.

The right hand stamp has two dots in the bottom right-hand corner instead of one
